Alteni di Brassica Langhe 2021 from Gaja is one of the most iconic white wines of Piedmont, crafted from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Its name is inspired by the small stone walls, “alteni,” and the golden flowers, “brassica,” that surround the vineyards of Barbaresco. The wine is a refined interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc, where Gaja unites an international grape with Italian terroir at the highest level.

The grapes are grown in Barbaresco and Serralunga, where calcareous clay soils add freshness, tension, and a distinct mineral edge. After a meticulous harvest, the must is fermented in stainless steel and small French oak barrels, where the wine also matures for 6–8 months. This creates a balance of pure fruit, vibrant acidity, and subtle complexity.

The bouquet opens with citrus, white peach, and gooseberry, unfolding into layers of oyster shell, sage, tomato leaf, and mint. With time in the glass, hints of cedar, chamomile, and exotic spice emerge. The palate is elegant and precise, marked by lively acidity and delicate saline minerality. Medium-bodied yet focused and linear, the finish is long, crisp, and vibrant, with fruit and herbs in perfect harmony.

Alteni di Brassica 2021 is captivating already, but it also has the structure to develop further complexity over the next several years. Serve at 10–12 °C in large glasses to fully showcase its aromatic range. Perfect with shellfish, oysters, refined fish dishes, risotto – or simply enjoyed on its own as one of Piedmont’s most sophisticated white wines.
