Castello di Ama – L’Apparita 2020 is one of Italy’s most iconic wines and a true masterpiece of Merlot. First produced in 1985, L’Apparita quickly established itself as a benchmark, proving that Merlot from Tuscany could stand alongside the greatest wines of Pomerol while maintaining its own unique identity from Gaiole in Chianti.

The wine comes from a single vineyard of just 3 hectares, planted at 490 meters above sea level. Originally planted with Cabernet Franc and Canaiolo, the vineyard was replanted with Merlot in the early 1980s. The clay- and limestone-rich soils, combined with the cool microclimate at higher altitude, provide the perfect conditions for Merlot, balancing ripeness, freshness, and structure.

All grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously selected. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel with extended maceration, followed by 18 months of aging in French barriques, a significant portion of which are new. The result is a wine of extraordinary depth, refinement, and aging potential.

L’Apparita 2020 is an intense and precise vintage. The bouquet opens with ripe dark cherry, cassis, and blackberry, evolving into layers of violet, herbs, graphite, cedarwood, and spice. On the palate, it is concentrated yet velvety, supported by silky tannins and vibrant acidity. The texture is rich and dense, yet perfectly balanced, leading to a long, persistent, and refined finish – a hallmark of the wine’s greatness.

Castello di Ama L’Apparita 2020 can be enjoyed now for its youthful power, but it also has the strength to evolve for 20 years or more, developing further complexity over time. It is a perfect companion to beef, game, truffle dishes, and aged cheeses – or simply as a wine for those rare moments when only the very best will do.
