Terre Nere – Etna Bianco Calderara Sottana 2019 is one of Sicily’s most distinctive white wines and a benchmark for what Mount Etna can deliver. Founded by Marco de Grazia, Tenuta delle Terre Nere has become a pioneer in showcasing Etna’s individual crus, with Calderara Sottana among the most celebrated.

The Calderara Sottana vineyard lies on Etna’s northern slopes at 600–700 meters above sea level. Its soils are composed of large volcanic stones and sandy ash, giving wines of striking minerality, intensity, and longevity. The high-altitude microclimate, with warm days and cool nights, provides the perfect conditions for grapes of remarkable freshness and complexity.

The wine is based primarily on Carricante, complemented by small amounts of local varieties such as Catarratto, Grecanico, and Minnella. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented slowly in stainless steel, and aged partly in steel and partly in large oak casks, resulting in a wine that balances purity with texture.

The 2019 vintage is precise and layered. The bouquet opens with citrus, white flowers, and green apple, followed by notes of anise, smoke, salty minerals, and crushed stone. On the palate, it is taut and energetic, driven by vibrant acidity yet supported by a dense fruit core and creamy texture. The finish is long, focused, and mineral, with a chalky freshness that defines Calderara Sottana.

Etna Bianco Calderara Sottana 2019 can be enjoyed now for its clarity and energy, yet it has the structure to evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, developing tertiary notes of honey, beeswax, and toasted nuts. A superb match for shellfish, grilled fish, mushroom risotto, or lemon-herb pasta – or simply savored as a refined expression of volcanic terroir.
