Il Marroneto – Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is one of the purest and most classical expressions of true Brunello. Alessandro Mori’s “normale” Brunello represents the estate’s philosophy in its most direct form – a wine crafted without compromise, balancing power and finesse with striking clarity.

The grapes come from Il Marroneto’s vineyards on the northeast side of Montalcino, planted at 350–400 meters above sea level. The soils are rich in sand, minerals, and ancient marine fossils, giving the wine aromatic precision and mineral tension. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented naturally without the addition of yeasts, enzymes, or modern intervention. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel without temperature control, beginning explosively and completing in about 12 days. The wine is then pressed and aged in large old Slavonian oak casks for 39 months, followed by further bottle refinement. The process is entirely traditional and low-tech – resulting in one of the most authentic expressions of Sangiovese Grosso in Montalcino.

The 2020 vintage captures the essence of the vineyard with elegance and intensity. The bouquet is delicate yet complex, slowly unfolding with rose petals, fresh mint, crushed stone, and ripe black cherry. The palate is lifted and precise, with red berries, lavender, and floral tones, framed by classically dry tannins that promise longevity. The finish is long, pure, and persistent, marked by minerality and inner florals.

Critics have praised 2020 as one of Il Marroneto’s most beautiful vintages. Vinous (Eric Guido) awarded 96 points, calling it “an understated beauty” with balanced intensity, while Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also gave 96 points.

Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is already approachable for its purity and elegance, but also has the strength to evolve for 20 years or more. With age it will reveal tertiary layers of truffle, leather, dried flowers, and forest floor. Serve at 16–18 °C in large glasses. Perfect with classic dishes of red meat, game, and mushrooms – or enjoyed on its own as a benchmark expression of Brunello.
