Isole e Olena Collezione Privata Chardonnay 2019 stands among Italy’s most sought-after white wines — a brilliant example of how Chardonnay can reach Burgundian finesse in the hills of Tuscany.

The wine is crafted by Paolo De Marchi, the legendary winemaker behind Isole e Olena in Chianti Classico. Known for his iconic Cepparello made from pure Sangiovese, De Marchi began experimenting with Chardonnay in the late 1980s, planting five Burgundian clones on the estate. Over the years, the wine has become a cult bottling — produced in small quantities and quickly sold out after release.

The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in oak barrels, one-third of which are new. The wine then ages for 10–12 months on the fine lees with periodic stirring (bâtonnage), a technique borrowed from the great white wines of Burgundy.

The 2019 vintage delivers a Chardonnay of precision and harmony — with aromas of pear, stone fruit, honey, toasted almond, and subtle minerality. On the palate, it is rich yet finely balanced, with fresh acidity and a long, chalky finish.

According to The Wine Advocate (95 points): “The 2019 Chardonnay Collezione Privata is a real achievement, showcasing varietal purity and textural importance in equal measure… This is one of the best Chardonnays to be found in Tuscany.”
