i Clivi Galea 2023 is one of the two top white wines from i Clivi and a pure, terroir-driven expression of Friuli at its most authentic. The wine comes from the Galea vineyard in the Gramogliano hills of Corno di Rosazzo, right on the Slovenian border, an area defined by steep slopes, constant light, and mineral-rich soils of marl and sandstone flysch dating back to the Eocene.

The blend is 90% Friulano and 10% Verduzzo, sourced from vines around 70 years old. Harvested in mid-September, the grapes are gently pressed and vinified exclusively in stainless steel. The wine then rests on fine lees for an extended 24 months, a long maturation that moves the expression away from simple varietal fruit and toward depth, texture, and a strong sense of place. Production is limited to around 5,000 bottles.

In the glass, Galea shows a bright straw-yellow colour. The aromatics are layered and restrained, with almonds, sun-warmed stone, honey, anise, citrus peel and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, the wine is deep and structured, combining a saline, mineral backbone with a smooth, almost creamy texture from long lees ageing. There is tension and freshness throughout, balanced by a quiet richness that gives the wine length and persistence rather than weight.

This is a classic, old-school Friulian white, built for ageing and nuance rather than immediacy. Galea develops beautifully over time, gaining further complexity and mineral definition while retaining its clarity and balance.
