Sorì San Lorenzo Barbaresco 2020 is one of the most iconic wines of Piedmont and a true flagship in the portfolio of Angelo Gaja. The name Sorì means “south-facing slope,” highlighting the vineyard’s ideal exposure, while San Lorenzo refers to the nearby church. Since Gaja acquired the site in 1964, this cru has been synonymous with intensity, finesse, and terroir at its purest.

The vineyard covers just 3.4 hectares in the heart of Barbaresco. Its soils are composed of calcareous marl and clay, and the Nebbiolo vines, many around 50 years old, yield low quantities of highly concentrated fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand, followed by a long maceration of about three weeks and approximately 24 months of aging in small French oak barrels. The result is a wine defined by power, precision, and Gaja’s signature silk-like texture.

The bouquet is layered and profound, opening with rose petals, violet, and ripe cherry. Darker tones soon emerge – blackcurrant, blackberry, tobacco, licorice, and mocha – carried by a clear mineral thread of graphite and iron. With time in the glass, the aromatic complexity deepens further, revealing dried flowers, herbs, and spice.

The palate is concentrated and vibrant, shaped by ripe yet fine-grained tannins. Lively acidity gives lift and balance to the dark fruit and savory notes. The texture is rich but never heavy, with all elements in harmony. The finish is long, intense, and persistent, marked by graphite, herbs, and a resonant mineral tension.

Sorì San Lorenzo 2020 already shows impressive depth and elegance, while also possessing the strength to evolve for 25 years or more. It can be enjoyed young for its energy and power, or cellared to reveal tertiary layers of truffle, leather, dried flowers, and complex spice. Serve at 16–18 °C in large glasses. An outstanding match for game, beef, rich mushroom dishes, and truffle – or as a profound experience on its own.
